Fleas are small, bloodsucking insects that can affect any cat.

In Florida, the humidity and mild temperatures allow fleas to be a problem year-round.

Why are fleas a problem?

Besides being a nuisance to you and your cat, fleas can cause the following medical problems:

- Fleas transmit tapeworms (intestinal parasites) to your cat.

- Some cats are allergic to fleas, and suffer painful dermatological disease

- Severe flea infestations can cause anemia, which can be life-threatening in kittens and aged cats.

- Fleas carry cat-scratch fever, which your cat can transmit to you.

  Why are fleas so hard to control?

- Fleas are very prolific: in two months, two fleas can turn into 200,000.

- Adult fleas live on your cat, but the eggs they lay fall off into your home and yard. The eggs then serve as a source for reinfesting your cat.

- The immature fleas (eggs, larvae, & pupae) living in your home and yard are harder to kill than adult fleas, and they can survive in the environment here in Florida for up to 2 years.

What can I do to control fleas?

There are TWO things you need to do to control fleas on your cat:

Treat your cat for adult fleas. We have four very safe and effective topical products:

Treat the environment for immature fleas.

For carpeted areas, upholstered furniture and pet bedding, use Flea Busters a safe and highly effective powder that is guaranteed for 1 year.

For non-carpeted areas, you can use a fogger that contains an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR), such as Ectokyl ^tm (you must vacate the house for at least 2 hours).  We recommend Ectokyl fogger because most retail foggers are ineffective.

Use a spot treatment with an IGR, such as Ectokyl premise spray for places you cannot get with the powder or fogger.
