Home Dental Care in Cats

70% of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3

Oral disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem in cats.  Unfortunately, it is also the most commonly missed diagnosis.  It begins with the buildup of bacteria in your cat's mouth.  Bacteria combines with saliva and food resulting in the formation of plaque.  Further development results in tartar formation.  Without proper preventive care, this can lead to periodontal disease which can cause oral pain, tooth loss, or damage to other organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys.

The same nerves that cause humans to experience dental pain are also present in the cat.  Though the most common sign of pain in cats is no sign at all, other common warning signs of oral disease include bad breath, a change in eating or chewing habits, pawing at the face or mouth, and depression.  If any of these signs are noticed, you should have your cat examined by your veterinarian.

The first step in preventing oral disease is a routine physical examination including a dental exam.  You can also reduce the risk of oral disease by practicing a regular dental care regimen at home.  Dental home care is the single most important aspect of regular dental care.  It's best to start early, but even older cats can learn to tolerate dental care.
